Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Pinning a fly plaid at the shoulder for men, or a sash at the shoulder for women. It is structural rather than purely decorative, since it carries the weight of the cloth. Pin through both the plaid or sash and the garment underneath so the load is not on the cloth alone.
The same way it works with any jacket, folded into the breast pocket with a small amount showing. A tartan pocket square works only when the kilt is a different, quieter sett or when there is no kilt at all. With a matching kilt it doubles the pattern in the same eyeline.
Yes. Chrome brooch with a chrome buckle and kilt pin, antique with antique. Mixing finishes across the outfit is the detail that shows in photographs and is entirely avoidable. Design does not need to match, only the finish.
Function and position. A kilt pin weights the outer front apron of a kilt and pins through one layer only. A brooch fastens a plaid or a sash at the shoulder and pins through both the cloth and the garment beneath. They are not interchangeable.
A soft dry cloth only. Abrasive metal polish strips plating permanently and cannot be undone, which is why a cheap brooch cleaned aggressively looks worse after a year than one simply wiped. Antique finishes are meant to look aged, so leave them entirely alone.
Not with normal use, though repeated pinning in exactly the same spot leaves small marks over years. Set the pin once and adjust the fall of the cloth rather than repositioning the brooch repeatedly.
