The MacKintosh clan's origins trace to 1163 when Shaw MacDuff, younger son of the Earl of Fife, received lands in Inverness-shire from Malcolm IV. His son Ferchar became the first MacKintosh chief, establishing the dynasty that would lead Clan Chattan for over eight centuries. The early MacKintoshes built their power base around Moy and Petty, strategically positioned to control Highland passes. Through shrewd alliances and military prowess, they expanded their influence across Badenoch and Lochaber. The clan's leadership of the Chattan confederation began in the 13th century, uniting numerous Highland families under MacKintosh authority and creating one of Scotland's most formidable clan alliances.

Ancient Tartan
Before 1860, all fabric dyes came from nature — plants, berries, bark, and insects. The colours they produced were softer and more muted than what we're used to today: think mossy greens, dusty sky blues, and reds with a warm, orangey tone. A lot of people actually prefer Ancient tartans for this reason — the gentler contrasts let the pattern breathe and stand out in a way that bolder colours sometimes don't. Worth knowing: the pattern itself, called the sett, is exactly the same across all variations of a tartan. It's only the colours that change.
Modern Tartan
Modern tartans came about after 1860, when chemical dyes replaced natural ones. The difference is pretty striking. Those soft, earthy greens became deep bottle green. Pale blues turned into rich navy. Reds went from warm and muted to full-on scarlet. If you're after something bold and vivid, Modern is usually the one to go for. It's the version most people picture when they think of a classic tartan.
Weathered Tartan
Weathered tartans take their inspiration from what happens to fabric left out in the elements — faded by sun, softened by rain, worn in by time. The colours shift towards olive greens, warm browns, and very pale blues, with reds that fade down to something close to a dusty pink. It's a more rustic, lived-in look, and honestly a really beautiful one. If you want something that feels a little more understated and natural, Weathered is worth a look.
Hunting Tartan
Hunting tartans are essentially the camouflage version of a clan's tartan — greens and browns brought forward so the wearer could move through the landscape without standing out. Not every clan has one, and that's by design. If a tartan is already mostly green or brown (like the Black Watch or Gunn), there's no need to adapt it. But a tartan like the Fraser, which is predominantly red, would make someone very easy to spot in the field — so a Hunting version makes a lot of sense for clans like that.
Dress Tartan
Dress tartans were made for the big occasions — Highland games, celebrations, and traditional dance. The pattern stays the same, but the main colour is swapped out for white, or extra white is woven in to give it a lighter, more formal feel. As you'd expect from the Scots, the rules get bent every now and then — yellow has been used instead of white in some cases, which is exactly how the famously bold MacLeod Dress Modern and Barclay Dress Modern came to be.
The MacKintosh Story
Four centuries of history woven into every thread
During the Wars of Scottish Independence, MacKintosh chiefs demonstrated unwavering loyalty to Scottish freedom, supporting Robert the Bruce against English occupation. The clan's military reputation grew through the 14th and 15th centuries as they defended Highland territories against Norse invasions and rival clans. The famous Battle of the Clans at Perth in 1396 saw Clan Chattan, led by the MacKintoshes, triumph over Clan Kay in single combat before King Robert III. MacKintosh chiefs strengthened their position through strategic marriages, notably the union with the Comyn heiress that brought vast Badenoch estates. By 1400, the MacKintoshes controlled territory from Inverness to Ruthven, commanding respect throughout the Highlands as paramount chiefs.
Where does the name MacKintosh come from?
MacKintosh derives from Gaelic 'Mac an Toisich' meaning 'son of the chief' or 'son of the leader.' The name reflects the clan's ancient role as hereditary chiefs of Clan Chattan, the confederation of Highland clans. Originally applied to the leaders of this powerful alliance, the MacKintosh surname became established when Shaw MacDuff's son became the first MacKintosh chief in 1163, cementing the family's position as paramount leaders of the Highland confederation.
The 16th and 17th centuries brought religious upheaval and political turmoil to MacKintosh lands as the clan navigated Reformation conflicts while maintaining their traditional authority. During the English Civil Wars, MacKintosh support fluctuated between royalist and parliamentary causes, reflecting the complex Highland political landscape. The clan's internal strength grew through expanding the Chattan confederation, incorporating clans like the Farquharsons and MacGillivrays under MacKintosh leadership. Notable chief Lachlan MacKintosh strengthened Moy Castle and established the clan's reputation for Highland hospitality. The MacKintoshes weathered Jacobite uprisings with divided loyalties, some supporting the Stuarts while others remained loyal to the government, demonstrating the clan's political pragmatism.
The MacKintosh legacy reached its zenith during the Jacobite era when Lady Anne MacKintosh, 'Colonel Anne,' raised Clan Chattan for Prince Charlie despite her husband's government allegiance. Her leadership at the Rout of Moy in 1746 became Highland legend, where a handful of MacKintosh supporters scattered government troops through cunning tactics. Following Culloden's devastating defeat, the MacKintoshes faced harsh government reprisals but gradually rebuilt their influence during Highland rehabilitation. Clan members emigrated to North America, establishing MacKintosh settlements in North Carolina, Nova Scotia, and Upper Canada. The 19th century saw MacKintoshes serving as Highland regiment officers, colonial administrators, and successful merchants throughout the British Empire, carrying their proud heritage worldwide.
The MacKintosh tartan carries the spirit of Highland chiefs who led Clan Chattan through centuries of warfare, from medieval castle halls to Culloden's final stand.
