Ancient Tartan
Before 1860, all fabric dyes came from nature — plants, berries, bark, and insects. The colours they produced were softer and more muted than what we're used to today: think mossy greens, dusty sky blues, and reds with a warm, orangey tone. A lot of people actually prefer Ancient tartans for this reason — the gentler contrasts let the pattern breathe and stand out in a way that bolder colours sometimes don't. Worth knowing: the pattern itself, called the sett, is exactly the same across all variations of a tartan. It's only the colours that change.
Modern Tartan
Modern tartans came about after 1860, when chemical dyes replaced natural ones. The difference is pretty striking. Those soft, earthy greens became deep bottle green. Pale blues turned into rich navy. Reds went from warm and muted to full-on scarlet. If you're after something bold and vivid, Modern is usually the one to go for. It's the version most people picture when they think of a classic tartan.
Weathered Tartan
Weathered tartans take their inspiration from what happens to fabric left out in the elements — faded by sun, softened by rain, worn in by time. The colours shift towards olive greens, warm browns, and very pale blues, with reds that fade down to something close to a dusty pink. It's a more rustic, lived-in look, and honestly a really beautiful one. If you want something that feels a little more understated and natural, Weathered is worth a look.
Hunting Tartan
Hunting tartans are essentially the camouflage version of a clan's tartan — greens and browns brought forward so the wearer could move through the landscape without standing out. Not every clan has one, and that's by design. If a tartan is already mostly green or brown (like the Black Watch or Gunn), there's no need to adapt it. But a tartan like the Fraser, which is predominantly red, would make someone very easy to spot in the field — so a Hunting version makes a lot of sense for clans like that.
Dress Tartan
Dress tartans were made for the big occasions — Highland games, celebrations, and traditional dance. The pattern stays the same, but the main colour is swapped out for white, or extra white is woven in to give it a lighter, more formal feel. As you'd expect from the Scots, the rules get bent every now and then — yellow has been used instead of white in some cases, which is exactly how the famously bold MacLeod Dress Modern and Barclay Dress Modern came to be.
The MacLennan Story
Four centuries of history woven into every thread
Sacred Coastal Guardians
The MacLennan clan traces its origins to the ancient Kingdom of Dalriada, first established in Kintail around the 13th century as hereditary constables of the legendary Eilean Donan Castle. The family descended from followers of Saint Finnan, serving as guardians of sacred Celtic traditions and protectors of the strategic sea-loch fortress. Early MacLennans wielded considerable military influence in the Western Highlands, controlling vital sea routes between the mainland and the Hebrides. The clan demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the Mackenzie chiefs of Kintail, forming one of Scotland's most enduring Highland alliances that would shape centuries of clan warfare and political maneuvering throughout Ross-shire and beyond.
Fearless Highland Warriors
During the 15th and 16th centuries, MacLennan warriors established themselves as formidable Highland fighters, participating in countless clan battles across the Northwest Highlands. The clan reached its pinnacle under chief Ruaridh MacLennan, known as 'the Red,' who led MacLennan forces in the famous Battle of Auldearn in 1645, fighting alongside Montrose's Royalist army. MacLennans distinguished themselves as expert swordsmen and fearless cavalry, earning recognition throughout Scotland for their battlefield prowess. The family maintained their ancestral seat near Eilean Donan while expanding influence through strategic marriages with neighboring clans including the Macraes, Mackenzies, and MacLeods, creating a powerful Highland confederation that dominated the western seaboard.
Where does the name MacLennan come from?
MacLennan derives from Gaelic 'Mac Gille Fhinnein' meaning 'son of the follower of Saint Finnan.' The name originates from the ancient territories in Kintail, Ross-shire, where the clan held lands as hereditary constables of Eilean Donan Castle. This ecclesiastical surname reflects the Highland tradition of honoring Celtic saints, with Saint Finnan being a revered 6th-century Irish missionary who brought Christianity to the Scottish Highlands and established monastic communities.
Heroic Final Stand
The 17th century brought both triumph and tragedy to the MacLennan clan, culminating in their heroic last stand at the Battle of Auldearn in 1645. Chief Ruaridh MacLennan and his warriors fought valiantly for the Royalist cause, but the clan suffered devastating losses that effectively ended their existence as an independent fighting force. Surviving MacLennans scattered throughout the Highlands, many seeking refuge with allied clans while others emigrated to Ireland and later North America. Despite this tragic dispersal, MacLennan descendants maintained their proud heritage, serving with distinction in Highland regiments and preserving their unique clan traditions across the growing Scottish diaspora communities in Canada, America, and Australia.
Rebuilt Global Legacy
Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, MacLennan descendants rebuilt their legacy through distinguished military service and successful emigration to the New World. Clan members served as officers in the Seaforth Highlanders, fighting in the Napoleonic Wars, Indian campaigns, and North American conflicts. MacLennans established thriving communities in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and the American colonies, particularly in North Carolina and New York. The family produced notable scholars, ministers, and community leaders who preserved Gaelic culture and Highland traditions in their adopted homelands. Modern MacLennans contributed significantly to Canadian Confederation, American independence movements, and the development of Scottish societies throughout the English-speaking world.
The MacLennan tartan embodies centuries of Highland warrior heritage, from Kintail strongholds to global Scottish diaspora communities, woven in patterns of courage and loyalty.
