The Regan clan traces its royal origins to ancient Leinster, where the Riagan dynasty ruled as High Kings from their stronghold in present-day County Dublin. First documented in the Annals of the Four Masters, King Riagán mac Dúngal established the bloodline in the 9th century, commanding respect across Ireland's tribal kingdoms. The family wielded considerable power during the Celtic golden age, controlling strategic territories along the Irish Sea coast. Early Regans served as warriors, poets, and lawgivers, maintaining Gaelic traditions while defending their realm against Viking incursions and rival clans seeking dominance.

Ancient Tartan
Before 1860, all fabric dyes came from nature — plants, berries, bark, and insects. The colours they produced were softer and more muted than what we're used to today: think mossy greens, dusty sky blues, and reds with a warm, orangey tone. A lot of people actually prefer Ancient tartans for this reason — the gentler contrasts let the pattern breathe and stand out in a way that bolder colours sometimes don't. Worth knowing: the pattern itself, called the sett, is exactly the same across all variations of a tartan. It's only the colours that change.
Modern Tartan
Modern tartans came about after 1860, when chemical dyes replaced natural ones. The difference is pretty striking. Those soft, earthy greens became deep bottle green. Pale blues turned into rich navy. Reds went from warm and muted to full-on scarlet. If you're after something bold and vivid, Modern is usually the one to go for. It's the version most people picture when they think of a classic tartan.
Weathered Tartan
Weathered tartans take their inspiration from what happens to fabric left out in the elements — faded by sun, softened by rain, worn in by time. The colours shift towards olive greens, warm browns, and very pale blues, with reds that fade down to something close to a dusty pink. It's a more rustic, lived-in look, and honestly a really beautiful one. If you want something that feels a little more understated and natural, Weathered is worth a look.
Hunting Tartan
Hunting tartans are essentially the camouflage version of a clan's tartan — greens and browns brought forward so the wearer could move through the landscape without standing out. Not every clan has one, and that's by design. If a tartan is already mostly green or brown (like the Black Watch or Gunn), there's no need to adapt it. But a tartan like the Fraser, which is predominantly red, would make someone very easy to spot in the field — so a Hunting version makes a lot of sense for clans like that.
Dress Tartan
Dress tartans were made for the big occasions — Highland games, celebrations, and traditional dance. The pattern stays the same, but the main colour is swapped out for white, or extra white is woven in to give it a lighter, more formal feel. As you'd expect from the Scots, the rules get bent every now and then — yellow has been used instead of white in some cases, which is exactly how the famously bold MacLeod Dress Modern and Barclay Dress Modern came to be.
The Regan Story
Four centuries of history woven into every thread
During the Norman invasion of 1169, the Regan clan faced devastating challenges as Anglo-Norman knights seized Irish territories. Many Regans fled westward to Connacht and Munster, establishing new strongholds while others submitted to Norman overlords, adopting anglicized customs to preserve their lands. The family adapted to feudal structures while secretly maintaining Gaelic law and Celtic traditions. Throughout the medieval period, Regans distinguished themselves as scholars at Irish monasteries, preserving ancient manuscripts and genealogies. Some clan members joined Norman service, becoming administrators and translators, while others led resistance movements in the western counties.
Where does the name Regan come from?
Regan derives from Irish Gaelic 'Ó Riagáin' meaning 'descendant of Riagán,' from 'rí' (king) and the diminutive suffix '-án.' The name originates from the ancient kingdom of Leinster, where the Riagan dynasty ruled as High Kings. This royal surname reflects Ireland's tradition of patronymic names honoring kingly lineage, establishing the Regans as descendants of Celtic royalty who wielded power across medieval Ireland's provincial kingdoms.
The 16th and 17th centuries brought religious persecution and plantation policies that scattered the Regan clan across Ireland and beyond. During the Cromwellian conquest, many Regans lost ancestral lands and faced transportation to the West Indies or exile to continental Europe. Courageous clan members joined the Wild Geese, serving in Irish regiments across European armies, particularly distinguishing themselves in French and Spanish military service. Some Regans maintained their Catholic faith in secret, while others embraced Protestant conversion to retain property. The family's resilience during these turbulent centuries demonstrated their adaptability and determination to preserve Irish heritage.
The Great Famine of the 1840s triggered massive Regan emigration to America, Canada, and Australia, where clan members rebuilt their lives while honoring ancestral traditions. In America, Regans distinguished themselves during the Civil War, with many serving in Irish brigades fighting for the Union cause. The family produced notable politicians, including Ronald Reagan, who became the 40th President of the United States, bringing Irish heritage to the White House. Canadian Regans established farming communities in Ontario and Maritime provinces, while Australian branches contributed to mining and agricultural development. Throughout these migrations, Regans maintained strong cultural connections through Irish societies.
The Regan tartan carries the royal blood of ancient Irish kings, weaving together Celtic heritage and New World achievements in patterns worn with ancestral pride.
