Ancient Tartan
Before 1860, all fabric dyes came from nature — plants, berries, bark, and insects. The colours they produced were softer and more muted than what we're used to today: think mossy greens, dusty sky blues, and reds with a warm, orangey tone. A lot of people actually prefer Ancient tartans for this reason — the gentler contrasts let the pattern breathe and stand out in a way that bolder colours sometimes don't. Worth knowing: the pattern itself, called the sett, is exactly the same across all variations of a tartan. It's only the colours that change.
Modern Tartan
Modern tartans came about after 1860, when chemical dyes replaced natural ones. The difference is pretty striking. Those soft, earthy greens became deep bottle green. Pale blues turned into rich navy. Reds went from warm and muted to full-on scarlet. If you're after something bold and vivid, Modern is usually the one to go for. It's the version most people picture when they think of a classic tartan.
Weathered Tartan
Weathered tartans take their inspiration from what happens to fabric left out in the elements — faded by sun, softened by rain, worn in by time. The colours shift towards olive greens, warm browns, and very pale blues, with reds that fade down to something close to a dusty pink. It's a more rustic, lived-in look, and honestly a really beautiful one. If you want something that feels a little more understated and natural, Weathered is worth a look.
Hunting Tartan
Hunting tartans are essentially the camouflage version of a clan's tartan — greens and browns brought forward so the wearer could move through the landscape without standing out. Not every clan has one, and that's by design. If a tartan is already mostly green or brown (like the Black Watch or Gunn), there's no need to adapt it. But a tartan like the Fraser, which is predominantly red, would make someone very easy to spot in the field — so a Hunting version makes a lot of sense for clans like that.
Dress Tartan
Dress tartans were made for the big occasions — Highland games, celebrations, and traditional dance. The pattern stays the same, but the main colour is swapped out for white, or extra white is woven in to give it a lighter, more formal feel. As you'd expect from the Scots, the rules get bent every now and then — yellow has been used instead of white in some cases, which is exactly how the famously bold MacLeod Dress Modern and Barclay Dress Modern came to be.
The Rose Story
Four centuries of history woven into every thread
Highland Origins
The Rose clan traces its noble lineage to Hugh Rose of Geddes, who received lands in Nairnshire from King Robert the Bruce around 1306. The family established their principal seat at Kilravock Castle in 1460, which remains in Rose hands today—making it one of Scotland's longest continuously family-owned castles. Early clan chiefs served as hereditary constables and sheriffs, wielding considerable influence in the Highlands. The Roses of Kilravock became renowned for their diplomatic skills, often mediating between warring Highland clans and maintaining neutrality during Scotland's turbulent medieval period.
Medieval Power
During the 15th and 16th centuries, the Rose clan consolidated their Highland territories through strategic alliances and judicious marriages with neighboring clans. Hugh Rose, 10th of Kilravock, gained royal favor and expanded clan lands significantly. The family demonstrated remarkable political acumen during the Reformation, embracing Protestantism while maintaining respectful relations with Catholic neighbors. Rose chiefs served as justices of the peace and commissioners, establishing the clan's reputation for fairness and wisdom. Their diplomatic neutrality became legendary, with Kilravock Castle serving as neutral ground for Highland negotiations.
Where does the name Rose come from?
Rose derives from the Norman-French 'de Ros' meaning 'of the red' or 'from the promontory,' brought to Scotland during the 12th century Norman settlement. The clan name also connects to the Gaelic 'ros' meaning headland or promontory. The family established themselves in Ross-shire, where their name became synonymous with Highland nobility and their stronghold at Kilravock Castle became the clan's ancestral seat for over six centuries.
Jacobite Era
The Rose clan navigated the dangerous Jacobite period with characteristic diplomacy, officially supporting the Hanoverian government while maintaining private sympathies for the Stuart cause. During the 1745 uprising, clan members served on both sides, demonstrating the complex loyalties of Highland families. After Culloden, the Roses escaped the harsh government reprisals that devastated other clans, largely due to their previous neutral stance and government connections. This survival strategy preserved clan lands and traditions when many Highland families faced destruction, allowing the Rose heritage to continue unbroken through the challenging 18th century transformations.
Empire Service
The 19th century saw Rose clan members embrace military service throughout the British Empire, serving with distinction in Highland regiments during the Napoleonic Wars, Indian campaigns, and colonial conflicts. Clan emigrants established Rose communities across North America, particularly in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and the American colonies. Many became successful merchants, farmers, and professionals while maintaining strong connections to their Highland heritage. Rose descendants served in both World Wars, continuing the clan's military traditions. The family produced notable scholars, clergy, and civic leaders who contributed significantly to Scottish culture and Highland preservation movements worldwide.
The Rose tartan embodies Highland nobility, weaving together centuries of Scottish heritage from Ross-shire strongholds to global clan communities worldwide.
