About this collection

Girls' Tartan Clothing and Kilted Skirts

A kilted skirt earns its place better than a dress for most families. It works with a plain blouse for a wedding, with a knit for winter, and with a tee for anything casual, so a single garment covers several occasions rather than one. A dress covers one.

For genuinely formal Highland events a sash over the outfit is the traditional addition, pinned at the shoulder through both the sash and the dress so the weight is carried properly. It is not everyday wear and it will read as costume at anything casual.

Order to measurements rather than to an age, since children of the same age vary widely. Wash cool and hang to dry, then press the pleats individually on a low setting through a cloth.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

A kilted skirt or a tartan dress, a plain blouse, and a sash pinned at the shoulder for the most formal events. Plain shoes and socks or tights below. Everything else stays solid so the tartan is the only pattern in the outfit.

The same shoulder and the same pinning method, though usually a narrower sash sized to the child. Pin through both the sash and the dress so the weight is carried properly. See tartan sashes for how the convention works.

Measurements. Age based clothing sizes are averages and children vary widely, so ordering to age six will fit some six year olds and not others. Waist and finished length are the two numbers that matter for a skirt, plus bust for a dress.

Yes, and for most occasions it is the more practical choice, since a skirt with a plain blouse can be reworn in different combinations while a dress cannot. See flower girl dresses if the occasion is a wedding with a set outfit.

Cool hand wash or a gentle machine cycle inside out, then hang to dry. Press the pleats individually on a low setting through a cloth. Acrylic is a genuine advantage here, since it survives washing where heavier traditional cloth would need professional cleaning.

From around three or four, once the garment can be properly proportioned with lighter cloth and shallower pleating. Below that a simple wrap or a tartan dress is easier for a child to wear all day.
