Tennis Plaid Skirts

A short pleated skirt, usually finishing 13 to 16 inches from the waist, with a flat waistband and sharp pleats that open with movement. It came from sportswear and kept the shape, which is why it reads as athletic and preppy rather than formal even when made in traditional tartan.

Pleating and waistband. A tennis skirt is always pleated and always sits flat at the waist with no gathering. A mini skirt can be any construction, including straight or A-line, and often sits lower. Tennis skirts read sportier. Minis read either dressier or more alternative depending on the styling.

A fitted crew neck or a polo, trainers or loafers, and either bare legs or knee socks. Keep the top plain and short enough that the waistband stays visible. This is the closest cut in the range to the preppy schoolgirl look, so a plain knit over a collared shirt works particularly well.

Some styles include an inner short or lining and some do not, so check the individual product page before ordering. Given the length, most people prefer one. If a style you want does not include it, cycling shorts underneath solve it and are what most wearers use in practice anyway.

For casual play, yes, though the acrylic tartan is not a performance fabric and will not wick the way technical sportswear does. These are worn far more often as fashion than on court. If you want one purely for the look, that is entirely normal and what most buyers do.

Cool wash inside out, hang to dry, and press each pleat individually through a cloth. Never tumble dry. Short pleated skirts lose their line faster than long ones because the pleats have less weight holding them, so pressing after every few wears makes a visible difference.
