Design the
tartan your
family will wear
for generations.
A free interactive designer, an AI that turns your story into a sett, and our own mill that weaves it into cloth. From idea to woven kilt in 6 to 12 weeks. Registered with The Scottish Register of Tartans.
A pattern is a sentence. A tartan is a story.
Every band of colour means something — a place, a person, a vow, a name. Designing a tartan is choosing which threads of your life belong in the cloth.
You can design a tartan whether or not you have Scottish blood.
The Scottish Register of Tartans accepts designs from individuals, families, corporations, schools, regions, charities, and events. There is no ancestry requirement. There is no nationality requirement.
A tartan is a precise mathematical pattern, not just colours.
Each tartan is defined by its sett — the exact sequence and thread count of every colour band. That sett is registered and protected. The same sett can be woven in modern, ancient, hunting, or weathered palettes.
Once registered, the design is yours, recorded forever.
The Register is run by the National Records of Scotland. Your tartan receives a permanent number, a public listing, and a certificate. It will outlast you. Future generations can wear and weave it under your name.
Pick colours. Set threads. Watch the cloth take shape.
Click any swatch to change its colour. Drag the ⋮⋮ handle to reorder bands. Adjust thread counts to thicken or thin each band. Add up to seven colours. Every change re-renders the fabric in real time. Your work auto-saves to this browser.

Tell us the story.
Describe what your tartan should mean — a place, a person, a marriage, a moment. Our AI proposes three starting designs with reasoned colour choices, then you refine them in the designer.
Order your custom cloth — or get a complete kilt free at 30+ yards.
Once you've designed your tartan above, place your order here. Minimum 10 yards for custom weaving. The more you order, the lower the per-yard price — and at 30 yards or more, we include a complete custom kilt in your tartan at no extra cost.
What people say after opening the box.
Verified reviews from customers who completed the design → weave → kilt journey. Collected via REVIEWS.io.
"We designed this for our wedding in October. The team walked us through colour proofs before weaving and what arrived was exactly what we'd dreamed of. The wool feels heirloom-grade. Our grandson will wear this one day."
"My father passed last year. I designed a tartan with the colours of his fishing boat and the moor he walked every Sunday. Holding the cloth in my hands was holding him again."
"We commissioned a corporate tartan for our 80th anniversary. The team handled registration with the Scottish Register completely. Eight weeks later we had ties for every board member. Stunning work."
Real tartans, real reasons, real cloth in real homes.

A kilt shop since 2012. A tartan archive since the day we opened.
Scottish Kilt was founded to do one thing well: make custom kilts that fit the people wearing them. Over fourteen years, that work has put us in conversation with Scottish mills, registered tartan designers, and The Scottish Register of Tartans — the relationships you need to actually get a new tartan from sketch to woven cloth.
Most people who design a tartan online never wear one. We built this page for the small percentage who do — couples, families, regiments, founders, communities — and bundled the tool with the registration, the weaving, and the tailoring so you don't have to assemble three separate vendors yourself.
If you have a question that the FAQ doesn't answer, a real person on our design team will answer your email within twelve hours.
