Frequently asked questions
Anything finishing between the knee and the ankle, most commonly at mid calf, which is roughly 27 to 32 inches from the waist. It is longer than knee length and shorter than a maxi. The exact point matters, because a hem stopping at the widest part of the calf is the one length that shortens the leg.
Yes, if the hem clears the calf muscle rather than cutting across it, and if the waist sits high. The mistake is not the length itself but where it lands. A heel helps considerably. Send your preferred finished length rather than accepting a standard, since a midi is entirely dependent on that measurement.
A fitted top tucked in, and a boot or heel rather than a flat, since a flat shoe with a long hem shortens the line. A fine knit in one colour pulled from the sett is the reliable choice. Long coats work well over a midi. For a full length version, see tartan long skirts.
Pleated and A-line both hang well at this length. A straight midi can restrict stride unless it has a vent. Wrap styles also work and adjust at the waist. Whichever cut you take, the vertical run of the sett does a lot of the work at this length, which is why midi suits tartan particularly well.
Because the hem lands at the widest part of the calf, which is the one point that visually shortens the leg. Move the hem an inch or two either side of that and the effect disappears. This is why sending your own finished length matters more at midi than at any other length.
Not necessarily, but a small lift helps the proportion, since a completely flat shoe under a long hem shortens the whole line. Ankle boots with a low block heel are the easy answer and are far more wearable than a proper heel. Flat boots work if the hem clears the calf.
