About this collection

Scottish Woodwind Instruments and Whistles

These instruments share a fingering family. Tin whistle, simple system flute and practice chanter all use six open holes in a similar arrangement, so a whistle player picks up the flute quickly and a good deal of the finger work transfers to the pipe chanter as well.

Where they diverge is difficulty at the start. A whistle produces a clean note immediately with no embouchure at all. A flute takes weeks of practice before the first reliable tone. A chanter is easy to sound and hard to play correctly, which is why gracenote technique needs a teacher.

Choose material by circumstance rather than by tone. Polymer and metal shrug off moisture and temperature and need nothing beyond drying. Wood gives a warmer sound and needs oiling several times a year and protection from cold cars and direct sun.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Practice chanters, tin and penny whistles, wooden simple system flutes, and the chanters and drones of the bagpipe itself. All are reed or edge blown instruments played with open finger holes rather than keys, which is why the fingering transfers across several of them more easily than it would on modern orchestral woodwind.

A tin whistle, by a wide margin. It costs little, makes a recognisable tune within an hour, and its fingering carries directly over to the simple system flute later. A practice chanter is the right start only if your goal is specifically the bagpipes.

A tin whistle, comfortably. A flute, with some difficulty, since the embouchure takes guidance to get right. A practice chanter heading towards bagpipes, no, because gracenote technique learned wrong is very hard to unlearn later. Free tutorials cover the whistle well. For piping, find a teacher from the start.

Substantially. Tin whistle, simple system flute and practice chanter all use six open finger holes in a similar arrangement, so a whistle player picks up the flute quickly. Bagpipe fingering differs in that the chanter is played legato with gracenotes rather than tonguing, which is a technique change rather than a fingering one.

For whistles and flutes, the choice affects what you can play with others rather than how hard it is. For practice chanters, the choice is length, with standard suiting children and long chanters suiting adults who intend to move on to pipes. Check each product page and ask us if you are unsure.

Whistles in nickel, brass and polymer with plastic or wooden mouthpieces. Flutes in rosewood and blackwood. Practice chanters in polymer or African blackwood. Polymer resists moisture and temperature change and will not crack. Wood gives a warmer tone and needs oiling. For a first instrument, polymer or metal is the sensible choice.

A tin whistle in D for almost any age, since it needs no embouchure and produces a tune immediately. For a child specifically aiming at bagpipes, a standard length practice chanter suits smaller hands better than a long one. Wooden flutes are harder and better left until later.

Metal and polymer instruments need almost none beyond swabbing out moisture after playing. Wooden instruments need oiling a few times a year and careful protection from temperature swings and damp. If low maintenance matters, choose metal or polymer for a first instrument and move to wood later.
